And now my brethren,

what come you here to do?

When you joined our mystic circle,

Had you a purpose in your heart

to be of service to your fellow man,

and perform your allotted part?

Or come you out of curiosity

or motives personal in view?

Tell me, brother of the square,

what come you here to do?

Have you failed to grasp the meaning

of the symbols of the craft?

Have you learned to subdue your passions

and make improvements in your art?

Do you always, always uphold the trusts

on which we firmly stand

teaching the fatherhood of man?

Have you been willing to aid the brother

when life’s surges were fierce and wild?

Have you offered cheer and comfort

to the mason’s widow, wife and child?

“If you have done so, my brother,

you are a mason good and true,

and can give a correct answer

what come you here to do?”

Dear Brothers,

A Mason’s Wife

Author Unknown

From active masons, resolute, our wives and families we salute; We surely know the price you pay, who sit alone while were away.

No high degrees on you conferred, in lodge, your name is seldom heard; You serve our cause though out of sight, while sitting home alone at night.

Masonic papers list our names, awards are given, fit to frame; but you are absent….you who strive, to keep our fortitude alive.

You’re part of every helpful deed, on your encouragement we feed; without your blessing, how could we, continue acts of charity.

And so, this poem, we dedicate, to every Master Masons mate; And offer our undying love, Rewards await in heaven above.

This is a little poem for all the women of masonry who support and care just as much about masonry, day in and day out as we do. If it were not for them most of us may not be where we are today in our masonic journey. I think this poem is appropriate this month since we are holding a widow’s tea for all the women of past brothers. We must always remember them as much as ou beloved brothers.

Dear Brothers,

“The Beacon”

By Alan R Heath

Last night my feet tread a well worn path Around a checkered floor And they traced a mystic circle Where many had passed before.

Each step seemed to bring me closer To an ever brightening light Cast by some unseen resplendence Beckoning those with yet dimmed sight.

And as I came within its aura, I knelt and shared a prayer And vowed to be a brother to all who gathered there.

Then quick as a clap of thunder My vision it helped restore And I glazed about in wonder At all I heard and saw.

For as my eyes became accustomed To Masonry’s ever brightening light I realized this great beacon of knowledge Had bestowed on me new sight.

And I arose from my place of kneeling, assisted by another’s hand, another I now saw to be a brother Who before I saw just as a man.

And I came away with a different perspective To a world bathed in ever brightening light Grateful to my new found brothers For the gift I received last night.

For last night my feet tread a well worn path Around a checkered floor, and today I am a Mason and I’ll be one forever more.

As we prepare for our fellowcraft degree this month. We should all reflect and remember where we started, and never forget that great moment we became a “Brother”

Dear Brothers,

Question: “Any Brothers have any advice on how to get Brothers to show up for Degree practice?”

” A great Past Master by the name of Victor Ansett from Capstone Lodge #30, Detroit, Michigan once told me there are two types of Masons. They are 1) Wannabes, and 2) Wannados. Wannabes will wear the emblems around their necks, on their cars, and wear the clothes. Some will even have themselves tatooed on their arms and chest to show off that they are Freemasons. But are not obligated to do the work of a Freemason. And the Wannados are the ones that will do the work with respect to the craft, his responsibility as a Man, and his continuous commitment to Brother-love, Relief, and Truth. When they get to that level of understanding, then you have a Lodge of Faithful Brothers who will not mind doing the work of True Freemason Brothers.”

As we have recently been told retention is crucial to the strength and longevity of a lodge. We take an oath and should live by that oath no matter what the situation. Freemasonry is not a status symbol, it’s a way of life. So make the brothers feel welcome and comfortable in their lodge not needed and unseen. Brothers as we move into darkness for the next few months , Please keep up with your newly raised brothers helping them study for their exams and inviting them out for summer get togethers. Just because the meetings stop does not mean the brotherly love should.

Dear Brother,

Last Night I Knelt Where Hiram Knelt

by Pat M. Armstrong

Last night I knelt where Hiram knelt, And took an obligation

Today, I’m closer to my God, And I’m a Master Mason.

Though heretofore my fellow men, Seemed each one like the other;

Today, I search each one apart, I’m looking for “MY BROTHER”

And as I feel his friendly grip; it fills my heart with pride.

I know that while I’m on the square, That he is on my side.

His footsteps on my errand go, if I should such require,

His prayers will plead on my behalf, if I should so desire.

My words are safe within his breast, As though within my own;

His hand forever at my back, to help me safely home.

Good counsel whisper in my ear and warns of any danger.

My square and compass, Brother now, who once would call me “stranger.”

I might have lived a normal life, And risen to distinctions;

Without my brothers helping hand, And fellowship of Masons.

But God who knows how hard it is to resist life’s temptations,

Knows why I knelt where Hiram knelt: And took an obligation.

Some of us are lucky enough to have cable television that provides us with hundreds of stations to watch. But, how often do we spend hours “surfing” because we just can’t find that movie, show, blog or post that moves our soul.

I, for one, am grateful for having Brothers that provide listen ears, helping hands, and thoughtful hearts. No YouTube video can ever replace that.

THE SEA CAPTAIN

by Donald Weisse Sr.

I’ve sailed my ship for many a day across the stormy sea.

Many a ruffian I have carried and never refused but three.

They met me on a summer day and saw my gallant ship.

And sought a passage to the other side upon a hurried trip.

They offered all the dough they had, mixed with a little sass.

Which made me kind of hesitate and I asked them for a pass.

They deemed a pass unnecessary for men of their degree,

and insisted that I take my ship and sail it out to sea.

An old man who was standing by noted what they said,

Saw them kick me in the ribs and strike me on the head.

He heard them say they’d steal the boat and put it out to sea

And sail away to the other side to some strange country.

But now the coward of the bunch the one you’d think was brave,

Suggested that they turn again and hide in a mountain cave.

And as the day went slowly by, I heard the truth in time ,

I found that they were murderers and guilty of a crime.

So, as I sail my sturdy ship until my life has ceased,

I know not who my friends may be unless they’ve traveled East.

There will always be strangers in our lives that we may be leery of, but we must always trust the good and lead with our hearts. The mind and heart will always guide you on a path that is never wrong. Brothers travel with good intentions and if bad should happen to find you, remember you have vowed to be good to all men.

Brothers, we are getting ready for an EA degree, the first of 2019 for Harmony Lodge. We have been practicing our ritual and floor work to make the new candidates experience the best they could have. For them to experience a night that will last with them forever. It only happens once, so all candidates should have a proud feeling of honor to receive so great a benefit. This starts them on the path to masonry, one that we have all traveled in the same way and manner. Don’t forget your newly initiated brothers, help them grow and succeed to the passing of fellowcraft masons. This will only be possible with help of all our brothers in masonry.

Fun Fact:

A LADY FREEMASON? Yes

In 1712 at Doneraile House County Cork, where a speculative Lodge was being held in the Mansion of Lord Doneraile, The Right Honourable Betty St. Ledger, afterwards Mrs. Aldworth (sister of his Lordship), was admitted a Freemason, ( she being the only Lady Freemason ever regularly initiated into our society, her initiation is one of the romances of Freemasonry.) Mentoring

We are lost,

We are searching for answers

We can’t find our way

We seek guidance

But we have no one to turn to!

Who will find you?

Who has all the answers?

Who knows the path?

Who may be the help in time of need?

Who?

Mentors!

My Brothers,

Mentoring masons have always been the guiding light for all newly raised masons. Mentors are there to guide them in the journey to never-ending light. To aid in all their knowledge that they seek.Mentors show them all that one mason may know and then some by the aid of other masons. Our light will never stop shining if we continue to feed our minds with good thoughts and good will towards all things in our lives. Remember Brothers be ye all of one mind and may peace and love cement us all.

My Brothers, Greetings for a New Year. As a New Year begins, we all look for that new resolution to uplift us and guide us through the year ahead. We join the crusade , try the new path, and set a new goal. In the hopes for a life changing outcome. January 1st starts the race to a new accomplishment, a Goal is set, ideas are thought, and reality is checked.  As masons we always strive to achieve the best in what the world hands us.  We are always taught to be our best and to present our best.  “We make good men better.”  We are coming off a great year in masonry, but let’s make it a better year. I look forward to serving all my brethren in the 2019 year and will do my best to guide and show the way of masonry in the best way I can. Remember brethren to always “Meet on the square and act on the level.”

My Brother,

The Mason’s word – By Bro. Rev. John George Gibson                                                    (From The Tyler Keystone, Ann Arbor, Mich., January 1914)

Mason, pass thy word before the Throne,

The throne of Truth and Light.

Thine Honor pledge to God in Heaven above,

Each day to go the right.

Then Mason, by the square of the holiest Law,

Test every sweet desire.

Plumb well each plan, then eager forward go

To noblest things aspire.

And Mason, never pass thy word to Man

Save as the Law commands.

But when ’tis right, then in fighting van,

Each Mason faithful stands.

Each Mason’s word though cautiously ’tis given,

is gone beyond recall;

Though hearts, by tempting afterthoughts, be riven,

For e’er he gives his all.

The word was in the stoneyard plumbed and squared,

‘Tis now for aye built in.

The King can never have his courses bared

Sin’s wages to win.

What e’er the cost of loyalty may be,

The Mason does not fail

His Honour’s word to keep, and bends the Knee

Before the Mystic Veil.

And thus the Mason’s word becomes the sign

Of Honour’s Holy Cross;

Of true obedience to the God benign

Who glorifies each loss.

As we now come to the closing of our Masonic year, let us remember the vows each of us has taken, let us take this time to reflect on our lives and actions and look within and ask ourselves; ” Have I been a good and just man?  Have I been a good Mason? Have I made myself a better man, a better Mason?” We have given our word and bond on the great Book of Law. It may be passing strange that this time of year may often bring reflection, for would not any season but suitable for such thoughts. Perhaps we move toward the end of the year and we realize we have taken yet another step on this path we call life that we take the time to quiet our minds, to look within and ask: ” Have I kept my word and bond to God, to my country, to my neighbor and to myself?”

Be well my Brother and may Peace and Love be with you and your family always.

Have a great Holiday Season!!

Fraternally,

John W. Lord, WM
